چکیده

Superantigens are microbial products which are immunostimulatory and disease causing. They stimulate a large fraction of T cells unlike conventional antigens. These superantigens include various staphylococcal enterotoxins, streptococcal toxic shock syndrome toxins, viral proteins etc. The superantigen family comprise of proteins that range from 22-29 kDa in size and highly resistant to proteases and heat denaturation. Superantigens posses an Nand Cterminal domain divided by a long, solvent accessible α-helix which spans the centre of the molecule and contains several hydrophobic residues in its solvent-exposed regions while the C-terminal domain adopts a β grasp motif. Various human diseases are caused by superantigens as food poisoning, toxic shock syndrome, Kawasaki disease and some autoimmune disorders. Different approaches have been developed for the effective protection and treatment of superantigens based diseases. The ability of superantigens to stimulate a large population of T-cells has been explored for cancer immunotherapy and treatment of infection and autoimmune diseases.

Enterotoxins: Microbial Proteins and Host Cell Dysregulation

The special issue “Enterotoxins: Microbial Proteins and Host Cell Dysregulation” is comprised of research articles and reviews covering a diverse group of toxins that affect the gut and dysregulate host immune response in mechanistically different ways. Excellent in-depth reviews of staphylococcal superantigens and Clostridium perfringens toxins are the cornerstones of this issue. The present e...

Bacterial pyrogenic exotoxins as superantigens.

The recent discovery of the mode of interaction between a group of microbial proteins known as superantigens and the immune system has opened a wide area of investigation into the possible role of these molecules in human diseases. Superantigens produced by certain viruses and bacteria, including Mycoplasma species, are either secreted or membrane-bound proteins. A unique feature of these prote...

Evidence for the involvement of bacterial superantigens in psoriasis, atopic dermatitis, and Kawasaki syndrome.

A growing body of evidence implicates streptococcal and staphylococcal superantigens in the development of psoriasis, atopic dermatitis and Kawasaki syndrome. In each of these illnesses, an abnormal state of immunologic activity is observed. Superantigens, which have a unique ability to activate large numbers of lymphocytes, are likely to contribute to these disorders in a number of ways. The d...

Identification of bacterial antigens and super antigens in synovial fluid of patients with arthritis: a cross sectional study

Background : An accurate and prompt diagnosis of bacterial arthritis is essential for earlier treatment and a good outcome. Superantigens produced by Staph. Aureus are among the most lethal toxins. The paper objective was Identification of common bacterial antigens and S.aureus superantigens in synovial fluid (SF) of children with negative culture and direct smear for other bacteria except fo...

Interplay between superantigens and the immune system.

Superantigens interact with the immune system by binding to major histocompatibility complex (MHC) class II proteins and activating T cells through the variable region of the T cell receptor beta-chain. Through this means they can cause massive proliferation and then death of a large proportion of T cells. Superantigens are produced by bacteria, mycoplasmas, retroviruses, and probably by other ...
